THE MUSEUM OF NEW ZEALAND TE PAPA TONGAREWA Te Papa, 'the treasure box' in Māori, opened in 1998, merging New Zealand's National Museum and Art Gallery. It's the 26th most-visited art gallery globally, with 1.5 million+ annual visitors. Located on Cable Street, Wellington, it replaced a five-story hotel, moved 200 meters away. Designed by Jasmax, built by Fletcher for NZ$300 million, it uses base isolation for earthquake resistance. Six stories house culture, history, and environment exhibits, with outdoor areas including caves, native flora, and wetlands. Tory Street hosts a private research and storage facility. |
