The ideal candidate will already be Reg 18 compliant and have proven experience processing Res 2 and 3 consents. With a strong focus on complex residential (R3) and commercial (Com1) projects, this role offers an excellent opportunity to expand technical expertise and professional capability in a supportive environment.

Building Control Officer

Stratford District Council

Stratford District Council is recruiting a Building Control Officer to help deliver building services across the district. The role combines office-based consent processing with field inspections, contributing directly to community safety and compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Processing building consent applications
  • Conducting site inspections for compliance with legislation and codes
  • Undertaking Building Warrant of Fitness and swimming pool checks

Building Compliance Officer

Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC) is seeking an experienced and confident Building Compliance Officer to join its dynamic Building Unit. This permanent position offers the opportunity to make a real impact in the community, ensuring that buildings across the district meet safety and compliance standards.

This is a varied role where no two days are the same. The successful candidate will carry out inspections and investigations, from swimming pool fencing checks to building warrant of fitness inspections. They will also be responsible for documenting outcomes, preparing material for potential prosecutions, and working closely with property owners, contractors, and other stakeholders.

The Council is looking for someone who brings a strong knowledge of the NZ Building Act and Building Code, as well as proven experience in compliance, enforcement, or investigations or has relevant tertiary qualifications. Strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential, as is confidence communicating with a wide range of people. Competency with Microsoft Office and attention to detail are also key.

Building Control Officer

Marlborough District Council 

Marlborough District Council is seeking a skilled and dedicated Building Control Officer to join their progressive team, contributing to the safety, integrity, and overall quality of life in the Marlborough region. This role plays a crucial part in upholding the Building Act, Building Regulations, and Building Consent Authority Accreditation Regulations, ensuring that construction in the district is carried out to the highest standards.

As a Building Control Officer, you will undertake the full range of duties, including processing building consent applications and conducting field inspections—either in person or remotely. The Inspections can take place not only in urban areas but also in remote and scenic locations such as Marlborough’s mountains and islands in the Sounds, accessible via 4WD vehicles, water taxis, fixed-wing aircraft, or helicopters. Duties are rotated on a rostered basis, offering variety and challenge.

Ideal candidates will possess strong interpersonal, decision-making, and time management skills, along with high emotional intelligence and empathy—key traits for engaging with the public and colleagues alike. A strong understanding of the Building Act 2004, the New Zealand Building Code, and Regulation 18 qualifications are essential. You should also be tech-savvy, adaptable, and comfortable learning new digital systems.

Preference will be given to applicants who have qualifications in areas such as Building Control Surveying, Architectural Studies, Engineering, or similar fields compliant with Regulation 18. Those already working within a Building Consent Authority or Territorial Authority, especially with current competency for processing consents or inspections, are strongly encouraged to apply.
