Recruitment CCC

E ngā iwi, e ngā karangatanga huri noa i te motu, tēnei te mihi atu ki a koutou katoa. He īnoi tēnei ki a koe. Tono mai ki tētahi tūnga ki te Kaunihera o Ōtautahi.

These opportunities come at an exciting time for our team as we grow our commercial inspection capability. You'll be joining a stable, experienced group where knowledge is shared, development is supported, and there's genuine room to build a long-term career in building control.

Our Commercial Building Inspectors work across a wide mix of building projects. Whilst the role has a strong commercial focus, you'll also gain exposure to residential work, giving you variety and a broader technical base.

Christchurch City Council has also been selected by MBIE as the preferred provider for the nationwide centralised consenting service for eligible grocery developments. This means our commercial team supports significant projects across New Zealand - not just Christchurch.

About the role - Ko te mahi nei

This is a role with real scope. You'll work on new and existing buildings, complex commercial alterations, public-facing developments, fire and accessibility considerations, structural interfaces, and residential work that matters to local communities.

You'll also have access to our in-house Engineering Services Team, including fire, civil, structural, mechanical/HVAC, and geotechnical specialists.

As a Commercial Building Inspector, you will:

  • Conduct inspections to assess compliance with approved plans, the Building Code and relevant legislation
  • Work across a broad range of commercial and complex projects, with some residential work where needed
  • Support nationally significant grocery consenting work
  • Apply sound technical judgement to resolve compliance matters and support safe, practical outcomes
  • Work alongside in-house engineering specialists to test ideas and work through technical issues
  • Provide clear, professional advice to builders, designers, engineers, and other stakeholders
  • Prepare accurate inspection records and contribute to consistent, evidence-based decision-making
  • Continue developing your capability through mentoring, training, competency assessment, and exposure to varied work

About you - Ko Koe Tēnei

We're keen to hear from people at different stages of their building control or wider building industry career. Commercial inspection experience is great, but not essential - strong building-related experience is also valuable.

You may come from:

  • Commercial or residential building inspection
  • Construction or construction supervision
  • Design, draughting, plumbing, drainage, site coordination or similar fields

Ideally, you will bring:

  • A Regulation 18 qualification (or be working towards one, or willing to achieve it with support)
  • Existing BCA competency or relevant experience to build from
  • Experience in the NZ building industry
  • Practical understanding of building work and compliance
  • Sound judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to make fair, evidence-based decisions
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach
  • A willingness to keep learning and developing your commercial capability

If you have the right technical base, attitude, and willingness to learn, we can support your development through training, mentoring, engineering support, and competency pathways.

What's in it for you? - He aha ngā hua ki a koe?

Working for Christchurch City Council means contributing to safe, resilient, and compliant buildings for our community.

You'll also benefit from:

  • Exposure to varied and technically interesting work
  • Involvement in significant local, regional, and national projects
  • Access to in-house engineering expertise
  • A genuine development pathway, including mentoring and competency progression
  • A clear competency-based salary progression structure
  • Flexible working arrangements where appropriate
  • A collaborative environment where your skills and judgement are valued
  • A range of Council staff benefits, including health schemes and retail discounts

At the Christchurch City Council, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway.

We understand that recruitment processes can be challenging. If you require any support or adjustments to help you put your best foot forward, please reach out to us at jobs@ccc.govt.nz
