About the role

We have an opportunity for a building control team leader to join our building solutions team. The building control team leader would be responsible for supporting our building consenting or inspecting function (depending on your skills and experience), and managing a team of building control officers and senior building control officers. Our building control officers are responsible for ensuring Council’s obligations with regard to building control legislation, who deliver on both building consent processing and inspections. Supported by a second building control team leader, technical lead and reporting to the manager building solutions, this is a role where you can thrive and develop your leadership skills.

Your responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • leading a customer-focused team to deliver consent processing and inspections advice in alignment with the Building Act and related legislation
  • prioritising workloads and ensuring statutory timeframes and customer expectations are consistently met across all BCA functions
  • collaborating with the other building control leader to coordinate team activities
  • communicating Council’s vision and values while fostering a high-performing, engaged, and empowered team culture
  • maintaining personal competency in building control processing and reg 18 qualifications, while supporting team delivery
  • driving innovation and continuous improvement in building control services, including cross-departmental collaboration and industry engagement

To be successful in this role you will ideally have:

  • passion for developing and supporting others in their building careers with ability to lead and motivate a high-performing team
  • A proactive, customer-centric mindset with a can-do attitude and a track record of delivering process improvements
  • excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively
  • strong understanding of the NZ Building Act, Building Code, and plumbing and drainage standards
  • a technical qualification in alignment with building reg 18, and R1-3 and C1-2 competencies with experience in a building control role
