As part of our Building Control team, you'll help ensure building work across our district is safe, compliant and built to last. You'll work closely with homeowners, builders, developers and industry professionals, providing practical advice and helping projects move through the building process with confidence.

This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week.

 

About the gig

We're looking for either a graduate, Building Control Officer or Senior Building Control Officer to join our close-knit Regulatory and Growth team.

No two days are quite the same. One day you might be assessing consent applications, the next you're out on site carrying out inspections, answering technical questions or helping someone navigate the Building Act. You'll be a trusted source of advice for customers and play an important role in maintaining public confidence in the building process.

In this role you'll:

 

  • Assess building consent applications against the Building Code and relevant legislation
  • Carry out building inspections and determine compliance requirements
  • Issue and process building-related documentation, including Code Compliance Certificates and Notices to Fix
  • Provide clear, practical advice to homeowners, builders, developers and the wider community
  • Help ensure Council meets its statutory obligations and legislative timeframes
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and Building Consent Authority accreditation requirements
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes

 

For Senior Building Control Officer applicants, there will also be opportunities to take a lead role in technical decision-making, mentor others, contribute to quality systems and provide specialist expertise on more complex projects.

A bit about you

 

You don't need to tick every box, but you'll likely bring a mix of technical knowledge, practical experience and a customer-focused mindset.

We're keen to hear from people who have:

 

  • A relevant technical qualification recognised under the Accreditation of Building Control Authorities Regulations 2006
  • Experience working with the Building Act 2004, New Zealand Building Code and associated regulations
  • Current building control competencies or the ability to obtain and maintain them
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to explain technical requirements in a way people can understand
  • Sound judgement and the ability to make balanced decisions within legislative frameworks
  • Great organisation skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence
  • A collaborative attitude and a genuine commitment to customer service

 

For Building Control Officer applicants, experience within residential building control environments is important.

For Senior Building Control Officer applicants, you'll also bring advanced technical competency, extensive industry experience and demonstrated leadership capability, ideally including involvement with quality systems or accreditation processes.

The pay for this role is depending on your skills and experience, but is between:

 

  • Building Control Officer - $75,003 and $88,239 per year
  • Senior Building Control Officer - $93,243 and $109,697 per year
