Te Wero – The Challenge

As Teams Leader - Building Inspections, you'll ensure our district's buildings are safe, resilient and compliant. You'll balance robust regulatory decision-making with an enabling, customer-centric approach - supporting builders, designers, homeowners and mana whenua to achieve great outcomes, together.

You'll provide strong technical and people leadership, ensuring compliance with the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and BCA accreditation requirements. You'll champion quality assurance, coach and develop staff, lead audits and inspections, and drive continuous improvement - while maintaining an enabling, customer centric approach.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, monitoring and developing the inspections team
  • Ensuring compliance with BCA quality systems and regulations
  • Providing technical leadership across inspections, audits and complaints
  • Issuing certificates and statutory notices as an Authorised Officer
  • Building strong relationships with customers, industry and stakeholders
  • Promoting health, safety, inclusion and cultural awareness
  • Contributing to policy, procedure and service improvements
  • Planning for future capability and resourcing needs

I ā koe - About You

You’ll bring strong leadership experience, sound technical knowledge, and a collaborative mindset, along with:

  • A qualification in construction, design or construction management (or equivalent)
  • Local government experience applying the NZ Building Act and Building Code and relevant regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of NZS 3604, BWOF, specified systems and compliance pathways
  • Audit and quality assurance experience within a BCA environment
  • Excellent communication, organisation and relationship‑building skills
  • Understanding of Māori perspectives, Treaty of Waitangi principles and diverse communities
  • Current driver’s licence and solid computer literacy
  • A passion for great customer outcomes and continuous improvement.
  • An advantage if you have commercial competencies.
