About us

Waimakariri District is growing, with a population of nearly 69,000 people, underpinned by strong residential and commercial property activity.

With more residential lots becoming available, we are expecting sustained growth and at Waimakariri District Council we’re focused on supporting building activity through efficient, high quality consenting services.

To achieve this goal, our small commercial team is dedicated to working closely with our customers to collaborate, while at the same time ensuring that our regulatory obligations are met.

About the Role

  • Process a wide variety of building consent applications, ensuring compliance with the New Zealand Building Code — including home businesses, light industrial developments, commercial base builds and fit-outs, alterations, retirement villages, and schools.
  • Prepare schedules of specified systems and compliance schedules with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Provide support to the residential processing team and collaborate closely with staff across the Building Unit.
  • Liaise with internal teams including administration, inspections, code compliance auditors, and wider Council departments such as planning, infrastructure, and compliance.
  • Work within our Building Consent Authority (BCA) Quality Assurance System, ensuring adherence to accreditation standards and continuous improvement.

About you

  • Proven experience in commercial building consenting, with a recognised qualification that meets Regulation 18 of the Building Regulations (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities).
  • Established competency under the National Competency Assessment Framework, minimum Commercial 1, ideally Commercial 2, with 3–5 years’ experience in a commercial consenting role.
  • Strong working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Code, and compliance pathways, including the ability to assess and apply alternative solutions.
  • Extensive understanding of commercial building materials and systems, and experience coordinating technical documentation across multiple disciplines.
  • Skilled in compiling Compliance Schedules for complex commercial projects.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage positively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A customer-focused approach, with a commitment to building and maintaining strong relationships across the building and development sectors.
  • Proactive and collaborative problem-solver, with a professional and solutions-oriented mindset.

What we offer

  • A competitive salary package, excellent working conditions, and a supportive, friendly team environment where your contributions truly make a difference to the community.
  • Commitment to your professional growth, including support to strengthen your knowledge and maintain ongoing competency.
  • Flexible working arrangements that support a family-focused lifestyle and work-life balance.
  • Membership with Building Officials Institute of NZ
  • The Waimakariri District offers an exceptional lifestyle from beaches to mountains, with a wide range of recreational opportunities, all just 30 minutes from Christchurch.
