Southland District Council is looking for an experienced Building Control Team Leader to join our Building Solutions team.

This is an opportunity to lead a team of skilled Building Control professionals while helping shape how building control services are delivered across one of New Zealand's largest and most diverse districts.

As part of the Building Control leadership team, you'll work alongside another Building Control Team Leader, the Technical Lead, and the Building Coordinator Team Leader to drive service excellence, build capability, and support continuous improvement across the function. You'll have the opportunity to influence priorities, develop people, and help deliver high-quality outcomes for our communities.

What you'll be doing

You'll provide leadership, coaching, and day-to-day direction to a team of Building Control Officers responsible for consent processing and inspections, ensuring quality, consistency, and compliance with legislative requirements.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Leading and developing a high-performing, customer-focused team
  • Managing team workloads and ensuring statutory timeframes are consistently achieved
  • Supporting capability development and professional growth across the team
  • Driving continuous improvement and service excellence
  • Building strong relationships with customers, industry stakeholders, and colleagues
  • Working collaboratively across the Building Control leadership team to support service delivery and performance

What you'll bring

We're looking for a people-focused leader who combines strong technical knowledge with a passion for developing others and delivering exceptional service.

You'll have:

  • Experience leading, coaching, and developing high-performing teams
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Act, Building Code, and associated legislation
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach
  • Experience within a building control environment
  • Regulation 18 qualifications and competency aligned with R1-3 and C1-2 requirements
