Who We Are

Building Consent Approvals are a growing organisation in the building sector, committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable, and compliant solutions that support our clients and communities. Operating within a partnership model, we pride ourselves on being a trusted advisor who adds real strategic value to the businesses we work with. As we expand, we are looking for talented people who want to be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking team.

About The Role

We are seeking experienced Building Inspectors to join our team and play a key role in delivering high-quality building inspection services that support safe, compliant, and successful building outcomes. This is an opportunity to be part of a professional and collaborative environment where your technical expertise, attention to detail, and commitment to quality service delivery will be valued.

As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for carrying out allocated building inspections, ensuring services are delivered efficiently, consistently, and in accordance with BCAL’s KPI’s, quality standards, and client expectations. You will apply your technical knowledge and professional judgement to assess building work, make sound compliance decisions, and maintain accurate inspection records that clearly document outcomes and supporting rationale.

Working within BCAL’s Quality Management System, you will ensure inspection activities are completed in line with the requirements of the Building Act 2004, Building Code, relevant regulations, and established policies, procedures, and work instructions. You will maintain a strong focus on quality, compliance, and audit readiness while providing practical and professional building advice to owners, builders, and industry stakeholders.

A key part of this role will be building and maintaining positive relationships with clients and stakeholders through clear communication, a customer-focused approach, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service. You will respond to enquiries, assist with resolving concerns, and support the effective management of complaints where required.

About You

This role will suit a skilled Building Inspector who brings strong knowledge of building compliance, inspection processes, and a commitment to delivering quality outcomes. With practical experience working within, or alongside, a Building Consent Authority environment, you will have the confidence to apply building legislation, regulations, and compliance requirements effectively.

A sound working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and approved documents, along with experience across a range of residential construction projects, will be essential. You will hold a qualification that meets the requirements of Regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006, as well as a current Building Consent Authority Competency Assessment.

You will be a detail-focused professional who takes pride in delivering accurate inspections, making well-reasoned compliance decisions, and maintaining clear and comprehensive records. Your technical capability, professional judgement, and commitment to quality service delivery will ensure successful outcomes for clients, stakeholders, and the wider community.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working within, or providing services to, a Building Consent Authority environment.

  • Strong knowledge and practical application of building legislation, regulations, and compliance requirements.

  • Experience applying the New Zealand Building Code and approved documents across residential construction projects.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear technical advice to owners, builders, contractors, and stakeholders.

  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to assess information, make sound decisions, and clearly document inspection outcomes.

  • Confidence using computer systems, including Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.

  • A collaborative and professional approach, with the ability to build positive relationships and contribute to a high-performing team.

A commitment to professionalism, continuous improvement, and delivering exceptional building compliance services will be highly valued in this role.
