About The Role

We are continuing to grow our team and are seeking experienced Building Consent Officers (Processors) to join our Rolleston office. As a Building Consent Officer (Processing), you will play a key role in delivering high-quality building consent services that are efficient, consistent, and aligned with BCAL’s KPI’s, quality standards, and client expectations. You will assess building consent applications, provide professional technical advice, and ensure decisions are made accurately, transparently, and in accordance with the Building Act 2004, Building Code, relevant regulations, and BCAL’s procedures.

Working within BCAL’s Quality Management System, you will apply your knowledge and experience to undertake thorough application assessments, document clear and well-reasoned decisions, and maintain a high standard of compliance and audit readiness. You will also contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, service delivery, and stakeholder outcomes.

A key focus of this role is delivering an exceptional customer experience by building strong relationships with applicants, owners, consultants, contractors, and industry stakeholders. You will provide practical and professional advice, respond to enquiries, and manage any concerns or complaints in a timely and effective manner, ensuring service expectations are consistently met or exceeded.

About You

You will be an experienced Building Consent Officer with a strong understanding of the building consent process and a passion for delivering accurate, high-quality outcomes will thrive in this role. With practical experience in a Building Consent Authority environment, or a closely related setting, you will have the technical capability to apply building legislation, regulations, and compliance requirements with confidence..

This role requires a sound working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and approved documents, with experience assessing residential construction projects and providing clear, practical advice to support compliant building solutions. A qualification that meets the requirements of Regulation 18 of the building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006 is essential, along with a current Building Consent Authority Competency Assessment.

A detail-focused professional approach, strong technical capability, and commitment to quality outcomes will be key to success in this position. You will take pride in producing accurate assessments, making well-reasoned decisions, and maintaining high standards of service delivery.

The successful candidate will bring:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Building Consent Authority environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and professionally.

  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to assess information, apply judgement, and provide clear reasoning.

  • Confidence using computer systems, including Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.

  • A collaborative approach with the ability to build positive relationships with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.
