Types of Membership

BOINZ offers several types of membership to people who work/ or are associated with Building Control Surveying.

Joining Fees

All membership types pay a one-off joining fee which reflects administration costs associated with joining the Institute.

  • Licensed, Associate, Affiliate, Student and Not For Profit memberships pay a joining fee of NZD$150.00 ex GST
  • Corporate Memberships - refer to Corporate Membership Joining Fees.

Property Inspectors - Advisory Note

Individuals interested in gaining membership with BOINZ who work in the Property Inspection field are directed to the Accredited Building Surveyor Programme, as the only means of attaining membership, to practice in property inspection with the Institute.

Licensed Member

Any person engaged in any of the fields within Building Surveying E.g. building controls, Property Inspection, specialist surveying that holds an appropriate membership (list of qualifications to be determined by the Board). The Board reserves the right to recognise applications from experienced non-qualified people working and practising in this category).

  • Voting Rights
  • Approved use of post nominal LMBOINZ on individual business cards (only)
  • Annual CPD Requirements

The Licensed membership subscription fee is pro rated for a person joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.

Associate Member

Any person that is employed and engaged in a technical role within a Local Government, Council or Accredited Private BCA but who do not have a current /appropriate qualification or accreditation status and therefore not eligible for Licensed or Accredited Member categories E.g. Cadet within a cadetship programme, technical support roles.

  • Voting Rights

The Associate membership subscription fee is pro rated for members joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.

Accredited Member

Any person engaged in the occupation of property inspection (PI) and are a current Accredited Building Surveyor.

  • Has successfully completed the Institute's accreditation training course requirements, reviews and audits.

  • Annual CPD Requirements
  • An Accredited member may hold dual status of Licensed member, should they hold an appropriate qualification. The higher membership fee will apply in this case.
  • Approved use of post nominal AMBOINZ and use of logo on individual business cards (only)

Affiliate Member

Any person not eligible for Licensed Accredited or Associate Membership status but who are actively engaged in the employment, supervision and /or support of Building Surveyors and their various roles. E.g. Local government management and staff, government officials, company owners employing Building Surveyors, those working in and supporting related and affiliated disciplines such as Engineering, Architecture, Building and Construction.

  • No Voting Rights

The Affiliate membership subscription fee is pro rated for a person joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.

Retired Member

Any person holding membership in the class of Licensed, Accredited and Associate may on retiring from all active work duties, apply to the Board for re-grading as a Retired Member.

  • Voting rights

The Retired membership joining rate is pro rated for members joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.

Student Member

Any person not in full time employment and enrolled in a tertiary course of full-time study approved by the Board and associated within the Building Industry, for a maximum period of 5 years.

  • No Voting rights
  • Please note, a copy of current Student ID is required. Students must provide proof that they are (at the date of submission of their application) enrolled in a tertiary course that is relevant to the professional practice of building controls.

The Student membership joining rate is pro rated for a person joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.

Not for Profit Member

A membership based organisation, which exists for the support, education, or charitable reasons, and from which its members do not directly benefit financially.

  • No Voting Rights

The Not For Profit membership joining rate is pro rated for a person joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.

Corporate Member

Any private organisations or companies engaged or interested in any of the fields within Building Controls.

  • No Voting Rights
  • Please note Corporate Memberships are not open to Territorial Authorities and Building Consent Authorities.
  • Corporate Memberships - The Corporate rate is pro-rated for a person joining at any point throughout the year until the 31 December.
  • Membership Benefits are applicable to each individual nominated within your Corporate Membership class.
The Corporate Membership 'one off' joining fee is exclusive of GST and is as follows:
