Our climate is changing, and big changes are on their way for the building and construction industry. We need to reduce our carbon emissions.

This weBinar series provides guidance on how to meet the carbon challenges for new residential buildings.

It has been estimated that buildings are responsible for a significant percentage of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions through:

Using a combination of science, tools and solutions, this webinar series covers:

  • What has climate change got to do with building and construction?
  • Where is the carbon in a building?
  • What is the difference between embodied carbon and operational carbon?
  • How do you calculate the carbon footprint of a building?
  • What design changes can we make to lower the carbon footprint of our houses?
  • What are the challenges of designing for low carbon?

Webinar 1: Carbon and the NZ building Industry

This webinar explains why we need to act now to reduce carbon emissions and the role that the building and construction industry plays. We explore the impacts of climate change and what we need to do the meet NZ's legal commitments to ensure global temperature rise does not exceed 1.5 degrees.

Webinar 2: Compliance and calculating building carbon footprints

Webinar 2 looks at the inter-related topics of compliance and how to calculate carbon footprints. We explain MBIE's Building for Climate Change programme for both embodied and operational carbon and explore the proposed new compliance pathways and timeframes for emissions reduction, which will become mandatory by 2024.

Webinar 3: Carbon Challenges

Webinar 3 explores some of the challenges we face in reducing carbon emissions. We don't have all the answers yet and there are are still some curly questions. We also need to be mindful of unintended consequences. Some existing construction practices need to change.

Webinar 4: Design and build a low-carbon building

Webinar 4 looks at practical solutions to reducing a building's carbon footprint. It seeks to answer two questions:

  • "What rules of thumb, if followed in design, can help to lower the carbon footprint of our houses?"
  • "What magnitude of carbon reduction could be expected compared to business-as-usual?"
