Our climate is changing, and big changes are on their way for the building and construction industry. We need to reduce our carbon emissions.
This seminar provides guidance on how to meet the carbon challenges for new residential buildings.
It has been estimated that buildings are responsible for a significant percentage of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions through:
- the energy they use when a building is occupied
- the greenhouse gas emissions from the extraction, processing, transport and installation of building materials and their maintenance
New Zealand has made commitments as part of the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including the Paris Agreement and the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act 2019. MBIE has also initiated its Building for Climate Change programme, which aims to reduce emissions from buildings during their construction and operation while also preparing buildings to withstand changes in the climate.
Using a combination of science, tools and solutions, this seminar covers:
- What has climate change got to do with building and construction?
- Will there be new compliance requirements?
- Where is the carbon in a building?
- What is the difference between embodied carbon and operational carbon, and what is their relative significance in reducing emissions?
- How do you calculate the carbon footprint of a building? What tools are there?
- How much carbon can we emit from our new residential dwellings?
- What changes can we make to lower the carbon footprint of our houses?
- What are the challenges of designing for low carbon?
As part of the seminar, we will use a case study approach and visuals to demonstrate practical ways to design lower-carbon houses.
