Big property players and building manufacturers back bigger fines for Building Act breaches

Two big organisations in the property and construction industry have no objections to bigger fines of up to $1.5 million for breaches of the Building Act in a major overhaul of the legislation.

The submissions of the Property Council representing owners, developers and investors of $50 billion of commercial and industrial property, and the New Zealand Building Industry Federation representing manufacturers and suppliers, show they also want stronger enforcement of the expanded rules and regulations under the review of the act.

The Government proposes to raise penalties for very serious breaches of the act to $300,000 for individuals and $1.5 million for organisations from $200,000 now.

Serious breaches relating to dishonesty and fraud or risk/performance assessment and hazard identification would attract penalties of $150,000 for individuals, from $100,000 at present, and $500,000 for organisations.
