Guest speakers
Ryan Cooper- Senior Building Inspector, Christchurch City Council
Ryan talked briefly about how we assess products during the building consent processing stage and regarding compliance for structural steel. He talked about how the Engineering Services team at Christchurch City Council will decide if it is appropriate for the agents structural engineer to oversee the verification and fabrication of structural steel so that construction monitoring includes not only on site building work but also building work that is done off site.
This was a brief introduction to an important topic, and Jennifer suggested the possibility of revisiting this subject in more detail in a subsequent meeting in 2020.
Frank Van Schaijik - Managing Director, John Jones Steel
Frank gave a history of the family's factory and how it has developed over the years in Christchurch. He detailed where the steel was sourced and explained some of their quality control procedures.
Members were spilt into three different groups and were shown around the steel fabrication factory. We were shown how the steel is received, cut, welded and assembled.
Special thank you to: Frank and his sons for hosting us and providing us with an amazing spread of food.
