The Government is looking at whether more buildings may be earthquake-prone

The Government is looking at whether more buildings might be "earthquake-prone", particularly those with precast concrete and hollow-core floors.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment introduced revised guidelines on how to assess precast concrete floors and other elements in concrete buildings for earthquake performance last November.

That followed lessons on how poorly precast concrete floors performed in the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, particularly in 10 year-old Statistics House in Wellington where two floors partially collapsed.

MBIE said the revised guidelines on concrete buildings - section C5 of the Earthquake Assessment Guidelines - were still at a proposal stage.
