RNZ Interview on Granny Flats with Karel Boakes

Following Karel Boakes' article earlier this week, she was interviewed on RNZ discussing the risks homeowners need to know when building a granny flat.

Karel highlights that under the Government's new rules, responsibility has shifted from councils to homeowners.

While the process can be simpler for some straightforward builds with no natural hazards and licensed practitioners, misunderstandings or missed requirements can carry significant financial and legal consequences.

Karel explained that the focus for the building consent process is on protecting homeowners and providing independent insight. With the shift in responsibility, homeowners will need to be well-informed, understand all requirements, and take active steps to ensure compliance. She emphasizes the importance of engaging licensed builders, scrutinizing Project Information Memorandums (PIMs), and following all guidance carefully to safeguard against costly mistakes.
