Correspondence In/Out
- Joint Interbranch Meeting (second request) - Canterbury Westland Branch have contacted the Southern Branch and would like to know if there is interest in an “away” meeting over a weekend next year. These meetings aim to visit a significant/interesting building or site.
- The Canterbury/Westland executive has suggested Oamaru EQP Buildings and Steampunk
- Members arrange their own accommodation and have a meal out on the Saturday night together.
- Liz was attending our meeting so explained how this has worked in the past eg visited Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs normally in spring time.
- Waitaki District Council suggested we could go to Queenstown for this, Nick has said SBCO will be in Queenstown in August 2022 so would be perfect for all BCA’s to send members to Queenstown for this.
- The new Antarctic New Zealand Base is to be built in Timaru so it was also suggested that we could hold this meeting in Timaru and organise a site visit of this build.
- BOINZ Board has also been discussing ways of helping branches - this will be coming out shortly.
Vicki will let Katie Page ( Business Development and Media Production Manager – BOINZ) know that we are happy for this happen – either in person or via zoom
General Business:
- All agenda items can be emailed to Vicki directly via victoria.mcmillan@timdc.govt.nz at any time before the next meeting.
- Please also remember to RSVP if you are attending meetings. This ensures we have the correct venue size and catering requirements.
- Branch Secretary Vicki asked if each BCA open to having a representative she can contact to see what the current issues / trends are. This will assist with organising relevant speakers she suggested these members could be in a monthly group email.
- If there can be people and topics added to agenda earlier with the assistance of representative staff can more easily be released to attend.
- We need member input for these meetings without this we aren’t able to source the topics/presenters you actually want to see. If you don’t contribute the less likely it will be that your manager will release you for future meetings.
- MBIE – Building Code Update on Monday 29th November – Insulation (new builds)
- Training – Jayson Ellis reminded the members that the spreadsheet for training requirements for the Southern Group has been sent to each BCA, this needs to be completed ASAP please so it can be forwarded to BOINZ to organise our training requirements.
- Jacqui from BOINZ informed the team that the Fire course run by Trent Fearnley has been updated. It is now a 2 day beginner course, 1 day intermediate course and 1 day advanced course.
- Roadshow Fire 2022 – Jacqui has sent out the spreadsheet of dates available, please let Jacqui know number ASAP please.
- Timaru has been selected as the build site for the new $344 million Antarctica research base that is expected to involve hundreds of jobs over six years. Timaru BCA have a meeting on the 9th December with the Project team and MBIE to discuss how this will work – what consents will be require for this project if any. Timaru BCA will update the branch at the next meeting of the outcomes.

Presentation Nick Hill – Chief Executive BOINZ
Nick thanked the branch for the opportunity to attend our last meeting of the year via ZOOM.
The board has its last board meeting of the year the previous Friday via ZOOM.
Topics Discussed
- Membership and Branches – the past two years have been tough with attendances and managing branches due to Covid 19. The board are coming up with ideas of how to increase network, help executives and getting Chairs and Secretaries together more than once a year. Membership has fallen off over the past two years but there has been an increase in registrations in the past year. BOINZ are looking at bringing in a loyalty programmes – this will include special cards dependant on length of membership.
- Budget 2022 – working on this is a tough job when income is down 75%. We did have a better year in 2021 with training before Covid lockdowns hit again. Jacqui has put a lot of work into Professional development e.g. Competency training, Pools training is now available online.
- Conference 2021 – this was a huge success, getting people face to face again. Unfortunately the Gala Dinner was cut short at very short notice due to Covid. BOINZ TV covered the BOINZ Gala which was seen by 400 people. The last day of the Conference was also picked up by BOINZ TV.
- Conference 2022 – this will be held in Rotorua from the 29th May – 1st June which is a highly successful venue. It was asked about having Conference in the South Island, Nick said due to the amount of people that attend it I hard to find places that can accommodate us in the South Island.
Make sure you attend the Welcome Function in Rotorua on the Sunday. Monday 29th November Papers close and 10t December early bird registrations close. Conference and the SBCO are going back to being two separate events – the SBCO will be held on 15th & 16th August 2022 in Queenstown. The SBCO is designed for Senior Managers & Senior team members it covers – Trends, Innovations, Hot Topic Discussion & Concerns & Issues in the markets to name a few topics. MBIE will also be attending.
- Nicola has been working on the Accreditation Programme, which has lifted off this year - The Accreditation Programme is managed by the National Accreditation Division part of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand. It is formal industry recognition of the education, standard of competence and professionalism reached by its members in undertaking property inspections. Once the individual has undertaken and successfully completed the Accredited Building Surveyors Training Programme they will have undergone a stringent assessment process in order to successfully obtain Accreditation as set out in the Programme.
- Qualifications Review – Earlier this year minor modifications were made to the course programmes – Year 2 Diploma have 60 people taking pat and Year 1 Diploma have just under 60 people starting this.
- Facebook BOINZ page – make sure you join this group to keep up to date with current going ons. Big congratulations to those who filled in the Well Being Survey, results will be available on line.
