Welcome
Chairperson Wayne Goodfellow welcomes all members in attendance. Wayne thanks the BOINZ national office attendees for coming. Wayne explains virtual house rules.
Guest Presentation: Steve O’Malley – Senior Advisor National Systems, Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
Steve explains how Fire and Emergency have approached asbestos management across their portfolio to help in determining risk levels and, create plans and/or responses. Steve gives an example of how PCBU’s can manage asbestos risk, and how to indicate the presence in a large portfolio.
Through a national survey, ACM was identified in 64% of sites. None were scored high risk and medium risk items were relatively low on the spectrum, managed through FENZ’s planned programme maintenance or limited risk through the AMP.
FENZ developed a policy, survey templates, and management plans so that site surveys across the country were comparable and AMPs carried similar language. This ensures that the plans were easily accessible and personnel and contractors can manage exposure risk safely.
Guest Presentation: Kaye Asham, Advisor Women’s Development, Fire and Emergency.
Kaye was born in Fiji and raised in Kaitaia. Kaye was the first female SO at her station, north of Auckland.
As a volunteer, Kaye is keen to see the challenges she faced when making her way up the ranks, not as challenging for newcomers to FENZ.
FENZ, like the New Zealand Police force, and the New Zealand Defense Force, is a male-majority organisation. Out of all paid Firefighters, only 5.9% of them are female. Out of all FENZ volunteer Firefighters, 20.4% are female. Only 2% of female Firefighters have leadership roles.
Women’s Development aims to promote, facilitate, and influence the decision-makers at FENZ to advocate for Women’s development. This is to ensure FENZ is recruiting and promoting diversity not just gender, but with thought.
Throughout her time, Kaye has seen stride toward making the organisation better suit woman’s needs such as the implementation of sanitary bins for ablutions, and pregnancy guidelines for women including maternity uniforms. However, Kaye notes there is still some more work to do around facilities, breaking barriers, and stopping unconscious bias.
