Matters Arising:
Nothing raised.
Correspondence In/Out:
- The gold medal presentation for Neil McLeod’s recognition of membership will be undertaken at our next meeting in September.
- Branch executives requested from BOINZ the members who have successfully completed their Regulation 18 requirement for the 2023 year. Unfortunately, this is not information BOINZ National Office can provide.
- BOINZ emailed the Branch executives ensuring building code issues are on the Branch meeting agendas so that any issues that come from this discussion can be taken to the advisory group.
- An email from BOINZ National Office was received regarding charging presenters. This was discussed and emails read in full. A motion was made by Stu Chapman to keep with status quo and not charge our presenters. Neil McLoud seconded this motion and it was agreed unanimously.
General Business:
- Congratulations were given to all BOINZ members who have successfully completed their Regulation 18 requirement for the 2023 year.
- Congratulations were given to the Southern members who received awards at the BOINZ Conference held in Wellington in May:
-
- Liam Brown received the Young Building Control Professional of The Year
- Chris Randell received the Training Commitment
- Vicki McMillan received the Unsung Hero Award.
Board Representative Update:
Dan Scheibmair, Southern Branch Board Representative Reported:
- Positive feedback was received from Conference despite the lower numbers.
- SBCO is in Queenstown in August – Please register and support this event.
- It was reiterated that the Southern Branch is the second biggest branch after Auckland, which is impressive.
- An open discussion was had about BOINZ and what members would like to see.
Building Code Issues:
- A discussion was had around how other councils are dealing with expander buildings/flat pack buildings. Section 14G of the Building Act 2004 was referred to.
- Southland Council advised FENZ are requesting to be notified of change of uses, as this effects evacuation plans. There is no legislative requirement for change of use reporting to FENZ, it is up to individual BCAs to do this.
- Peter Brookland is going to continue exploring a platform for a questions/answers forum for Southern BCO’s, as there is still a want for this. This is difficult due to potential risks of LGOIMAs and the liability on the BCAs. This was why the BOINZ platform had to be shut.
Next Branch Training and Networking Event: scheduled for Friday 6 September in Dunedin.
Special thank you to:
Dunedin City Council for hosting and to Neil McLeod for organising the site visit to the hospital and the fantastic explanation afterwards.
Site Visit to Dunedin Hospital Sites.
The sites visited were:
- The outpatients building which is currently having the structural steel superstructure erected. This building is particularly interesting because it incorporates seismic dampers.
- The inpatients building which is currently having the steel cased piles driven and will incorporate seismic base isolation.
Stu Chapman closed the meeting at 3pm.
Olivia McGregor
Southern Branch Secretary
