Guest Presentation(s):

 Jeremy Cosgrove from Stop Digging

Jeremy is based in Christchurch and has completed projects in the top of the South Island. Jeremy gave an informative talk on the Stop Digging ground screw. The company has been operating for five years and the system is now Codemarked.

The screws come in a variety of lengths and gauges, depending on the ground bearing and the loading of the project. If bearing is poor, screws can be installed closer, or larger screws can be used.

There are some bespoke brackets for attaching bearers or posts to the screws. Alternative brackets such as Bowmac can be used, however this system is then Small End Diameter.

The Stop Digging ground screws can protrude up to 900mm out of the ground and are considered anchor piles. Their system is preferred at sites of cultural significance, as there is no excavation, and Iwi observation is not required.

The screws are suitable for durability Zone D. Above Zone D, they need to be coated with epoxy or something similar.

Another advantage of the ground screws is the carbon saving over concrete foundations.

The screws can be used in multi-story buildings up to three stories, and be used to support or anchor scaffolding, security fencing, solar panels etc.

Chris Siebert from Mainmark

Chris is based at Mainmark in Christchurch and has a background in Geotech. He introduced the group to three Mainmark products:

JOG is a computer controlled grouting technology. It is a multi-point levelling process that is injected into the ground where it displaces and compacts poor soil and forms a laminated layer that raises the floor or foundation in ½ mm increments, ensuring minimal damage to the structure. It has a 50-year warranty.

Terefil is a lightweight cellular concrete technology. Terefil is a polymer modified concrete product which is an alternative to gravel rafts and weighs roughly half as much as gravel rafts. Using Terefil can reduce the required depth of the raft. It can also be used to fill large voids, such as underground tanks, pipes, mine shafts etc. Terefil flows like water and is self-levelling.

Teretek is a resin injection system for ground improvement for use under structures. It is a rapid expanding polyurethane used for precision lifting of structures and improves the ground bearing under the structure. Teretek increases ground density, reduces liquefaction potential, and can be used in sandy soil.

Next Branch Training and Networking Event: scheduled for June, date TBC at TBC.
