Welcome:

Branch Chairperson Stu Chapman opened the meeting and welcomed members. Health and Safety requirements were disclosed to attendees by Scott Taylor of Southland District Council.

Stu reminded members to go back to their BCA’s and share the knowledge from today’s event what they have talked about and learnt today – the more you are leaning & sharing  the more likely it will be that your managers will be keen to release members to attend.

 

  • Alana Reid – BOINZ Board Member / Southern Branch Representative introduced herself to the members. Alana told members she is our representative and gave a brief working history and please to get in touch if we need to talk to the board at any stage.
  • Alana gave a brief overview, informing members that the organisation is in good financial shape after the hit in 2020 (Covid)
  • There has been a great turn out for training courses e.g. the new Entry to BCA
  • Fees generally make up 1/4 of the income
  • Training, information and networking drives what we do.
  • BOINZ has listened to member’s feedback on conferences and where they are being held – Main centres are easier to get to for everyone and more cost effective for travel.  E.g. Rotorua is a great venue but being a regional airport it is more costly for members to get too.
  • President Peter Laurenson has resigned his position from Auckland City Council and is moving to Queenstown to take up a general management role that will have some building related aspects) but will be continuing his presidency term at BOINZ.

 

 

BOINZ Annual Conference & Expo is being held 22nd May to 24th May 2023 at the Grand Millennium Hotel in Auckland with the theme “Building Competency and Capacity” Get in now to book for the “early bird”, the technical programme is available at My BOINZ. Advised to book accommodation and flights early as tourism seems to be back in full force.

 

SBCO Forum is being held 16th – 18th August in Blenheim – more details will be out soon for this event. Think about topics for the programme “Leadership through change.”

 

  • Multi Residential Units increasing in popularity and consent volumes.
  • Auckland based concerns with Fire Design, given added complexity.
  • Not sprinkler systems, FENZ concerned CAS/1
  • Dunedin more  multi-unit developments but at this stage there is more parking/pathways

 

  • Natural Hazards
  • Sea Level Rise (Dunedin have guidance document’s – 3x alternate solutions)
  • Site specific design
  • Masterton – floating slabs – washed out due to flooding
  • Auckland City Council reluctant to put Sec 72 on titles

 

  • CAS1 – Outbuildings
  • School Boiler Upgrades, trying to push reports through as CAS1 as an outbuilding
  • Low depending on risk groups
  • Dunedin – Boiler only look to process as Schedule 1 Part 2, if looking to upgrade building then it would be a Building Consent
  • Group question as to if they agree this is building work, mostly agree.
  • Central Otago made Council Building get Building Consent

 

  • Unlicensed Plumbers/Gasfitters – Southland – Update
  • There was concern expressed that the PGD Board may have granted a license after registration fee paid, even though work was completed while unregistered - No physical proof was available from the Southland team at the meeting. Further comment was expressed that this may not be an isolated case
  • Mike noticed yesterday at an inspection (Granny Flat) that commercial fittings in a residential property – if you aren’t a gasfitter you more than likely wouldn’t notice these details (always question setup if unsure) Customer confirmed use was for them to use only not commercial
  • Alana suggested this is a topic BOINZ could take to the Board

 

  • Bio Fuel Heaters (no flue/stand)
  • Dean bought up there are banned in Australia as vessel was exploding
  • These are topped up with fuel inside the home

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

10.45am – 12pm Presentation: Simon Hoyle Managing Director of Ventuer Engineered Ventilation Products & Systems

Established in 2008, formerly a division of the Insol Group and split off as a separate entity in 2019. 

Ventuer engineers and supplies ventilation products, designs them to integrate with project-specific architectural, structural. Seismic and fire safety details and guarantees them to comply with New Zealand Building Code requirements whilst creating healthy and comfortable indoor spaces.

  • What/Who Ventuer are and how long they have been in operation
  • Why design and install ventilation
  • What common problems Ventuer face regarding design in compliance with the Building Code/Act
  • What problems you expect to face when it comes to Medium Density Housing/Fire Safety etc.
  • Installation process
  • What Building Control Officers need to look out for when inspection and approving ventilation systems

1pm – 1.45pm Site Visit: Greg Simmons Insol Façade Testing Laboratory

 

After completing all the health and safety requirements Greg invited the team into the laboratory to see the Wind Tunnel in action.

 

Insol Wind Tunnel - The Southern Hemisphere's only specialist wind testing facility for facades. The wind tunnel has an open jet, high power, short tunnel configuration. It's specifically designed to test 1:1 scale building façade elements for structural integrity and wind noise.

Able to generate flow velocities of up to 200km/h. The wind tunnel is designed to fit large 1:1 scale models over its 3m diameter turntable.
With full variable speed control over the 4 centrifugal fans, maximum control of wind speeds allow for low-speed acoustic testing as well as high-speed structural tests.
