Site Visit - Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Oxford Terrace, Christchurch

Speakers:
Rob Forrester, Project Director

Rob gave an overview of the project. He introduced the Design and Build team and explained t he processes from design brief through to build.

The building has been constructed to provide a world class convention centre able to accommodate 6000 people and has multiple different spaces. The project has been constructed as a Design and Building by CPB Contractors as a main contractor and Woods Bagot, WSP, Holmes and T&T as design team.

Rob discussed the many challenges that the build has presented including the complex structure aimed to represent the braided rivers of the region - there are very few (if any!) straight lines or flat walls/ceilings which has meant the structural engineering of the building and seismic engineering of services has been continuously evolving throughout the build.

The acoustic engineering of the different areas within the centre have also been constructed to meet the high specification required by the client, and Rob confirmed he is confident that on completion, the auditorium will be able to host a rock concert which won't be heard from the adjacent banquet hall.

Work started on the site 31st August 2017 and was due for completion March 2021, but Rob discussed the impact of COVID-19 on his workforce and confirmed the opening date is likely to be delayed.

The site currently has approximately 550 people working on the build.

Areas visited in the centre included the 'Meet and Greet' area in the foyer, meeting rooms, auditorium, banquet hall, service kitchen and the exhibition hall. These were all at various stages of completion and Rob was able to explain the different stages of the build.

The site visit finished with a summary from Rob confirming that he hopes the people of Christchurch will not view the centre as a purely corporate or exhibition space but will use the many versatile spaces within the building.

Branch Chair Jennifer than thanked Rob and his team for the informative and knowledgeable presentation and very interesting tour.

Next Meeting:

The date of the next branch was confirmed a 8th December 2020 - Venue TBC.
