Correspondence In/Out:
• Email from Paul Vernon to BOINZ President Kerry Walsh (quick summary):
Following the presentation from Chief Executive Nick Hill in July, Paul Vernon advised he had sought some further information in respect of concerns he had around the Institutes 2018-year end results. He also sought information on a number of other issues for clarification.
- How are the annual membership renewal fees used to benefit members and the branches?
- How is the income from SBCO, Conference and training used to benefit the members?
- What is the value members get from their membership?
Members reflected interest in the answers to these questions.
The President responded to his email in a letter; a summary of the parts being:
- Member fees collected from members of branches is not allocated back to individual branches rather invested nationally for the good of all members via projects and benefits. Overarching building control activities necessarily enforces budget effective adjustments to projects and initiatives e.g. courses being upgraded and modified to shorter CPD based courses including some being part of an online suite and an existing competency-based training programme. This is an investment for our member's future rather than a financial hit as suggested
- The finances are managed by the CEO on a day to day basis with strong reporting lines through the Board on at least a quarterly basis.
- Scrutiny by members is appreciated. A fair amount of money is spent on Auckland's monthly branch meetings and to be able to fund these entirely, there will have to be a significant cut/discontinuation to our other services.
- Financial results for the Institute for the first 6 months of the year to June 2019 shows a profit of $39,295 against a budgeted loss of $4,739. This brought about by tight budget control and cutting our expenditures where we need to as appropriate
- There are other expenditures planned for the remainder of the year which may indeed see a net loss of around $40,000 for the full year as suggested, but it is important to realise It is an investment for future services and income and will support training and benefits required by members nationally.
- The Balance Sheet at 30 June sits at $726,363, so even with a budgeted loss for this full year as mentioned, the Institute will still be very healthy and does not represent negative equity concerns referred to in the email.
Moved: Martin Reid Seconded: Ian Murray
General Business:
- Chairman Glynn Robertson touched on the new layout and responsibilities for the Auckland Branch Executive Team
- Jane Wu to record attendance and RSVP's.
- Hasan Shueb to record meeting minutes.
- All Executive Members have been asked to increase their presence during events.
- Questions and comments raised by members from the floor:
- Have there been any follow-ups on the last month's meeting?
- Will there be a change of venue for the following month?
- Metropolitan BCA's have their own training, what is the whole purpose of training courses?
- There is only one training scheduled this year, which is in December, members feel it is overpriced and unsuitable for availability.
- Director Peter Laurenson responded and advised some issues raised are still under consideration and investigation and responses will be advised when positions are established. In respect of training, BOINZ National Office acknowledges the interest in training from the Auckland Branch, please contact our Training Advisor Jason Goei if you have any queries or courses you would like to attend by emailing Training@boinz.org.nz
Guest Presentation:
Graeme Robertson and Steve Hardy - GIB
Graeme gave a 10 minutes introduction presentation on GIB as a prelude to Steve Hardy's presentation. Please find a copy of Graeme and Steve's presentation attached.
- GIB Winstone Wallboards has been in the market for over 90 years.
- GIB Rondo products and systems are covered by their extensive standard warranty and currently undergoing compliance tests.
- The GIB Rondo 310 metal batten system is based on a 35mm deep ceiling batten. It also works very well as a plasterboard for lining
- Graeme covered a range of GIB products from the BMCL beam clip which provides plasterboard fixing to structural steel framing in conjunction with 140 perimeter channels to their reasonable fire rating systems
- Graeme covered their Shaft Wall product, which is a one-way erected wall system suitable for both fire-rated and sound-rated applications. It is designed for lift shafts, stairwells and service ducting.
- Graeme advised on the spans of battens. 1200mm for multi span battens and 900mm for sing span and garages. Rondo batten spans also depend on the wind zones
- Graeme went on further to discuss some important standards:
- NZS1170:5:2004 - Covers earthquake action, location, importance level, part category and elements required.
- NZS4219:2009 - Seismic Performance of Engineering Systems in Buildings
- Seismic design guidance for suspended non-structural components
- Design Pathway and "acceptable solutions" (Pipework, ducts, cable trays)
- Excludes suspended ceilings, sprinklers and lifts
- As/NZS 2785:2000 - Suspended Ceilings Design and Installation
- No "acceptable solutions"
- Currently being updated (due November 2019)
- AS/NZS 2785:2018 Draft
- Appears to incorporate large parts of the AWCI COP 2015
- "is intended for use in commercial and industrial applications"
- Appendix (informative) introduces: PS documents pathway for design and reviews, CM (several levels) documents pathway, and Seismic Grades (SG) with guidance on pathways to compliance
Steve Hardy - Rondo Building Services
- Rondo Building Services is the leading Australasian manufacture and distributor of roll formed steel to the residential and commercial sector.
- There are two manufacturing plants in New Zealand based in Auckland and Christchurch there are further plants in Australia, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, while sales and distribution based throughout Australia, NZ, Malaysia, India and Abu Dhabi.
- Range of products:
Key-lock - Concealed ceiling system
Steel Stud - Drywall farming system
Maxi frame - External wall framing system
Evangel - Drywall finishing sections
Panther - Access panels
Rondo acoustic - Sound insulation assemblies
Rondo seismic - Wall and ceiling systems
Rondo Donn - Exposed grid ceiling system
Rondo Express - Drywall grid ceiling system
Rondo Screwfix - Concealed ceiling system - Steve advised that Council's are no longer accepting "static" tables in design manuals
- Whilst not always a consent condition specific seismic design is driven by MBIE to meet the latest code as non-structural items have constituted a large amount of damage to previously earthquake damaged buildings.
- There are multiple benefits of specific seismic design:
Upfront design results in efficient, workable and code compliant solutions
Who's paying - this issue can be resolved which is a potential conflict between MC and trades
Design can possibly incorporate M&E services and avoid softly clashes
More likely to contain accurate specification if approved at consent stage - Two types of generic seismic design -
Perimeter Fixing: the suspended ceiling system is screw-fixed to the perimeter on two adjacent sides with sliding connections on the opposite sides. Lateral earthquake loads are transferred from the ceiling to the perimeter through the fixed sides.
Plenum Bracing: the suspended ceiling system is restrained by providing evenly distributed braces in the plenum space, with sliding connections to all perimeters. Lateral earthquake loads are transferred from the ceiling through the plenum braces to the support structure. - Types of ceiling braces - Type A, type B, type C and key lock boxed stud dropper connection detail
- Rondo offers 3 tiers of support. These options are specific and are available for any parties in the project process:
Rondo Online Seismic Ceiling Wizard
Immediate access via their website
Self-Direction so the customer is in control for urgent deadlines
Project specific details and individual layouts can sometimes be considered to meet Council's requests for specific design
Code Compliance solutions/
Preliminary Design (Via Ronda Internal Technical Services Team)
Designed to be carried out by in-house engineers for project specific details with respect to NZ market, installation efficiencies completely free of charge.
PS1-PS4 Fully Certified Design
Fully considered designs for full projects
Design solutions showing the most effective build
The engineer takes on design and insurance liability.
More variables are removed - Critical Information required for preliminary design and PS's - title, address to determine the seismic zone. Building Importance level and general site conditions, construction drawings including elevations, wall schedules and mechanical service plans (If possible/appropriate)
- Internal pressures defect the spanning and deflection capabilities for studs
- Factors incorporated in designing internal walls are - Internal wind pressures, seismic loads, shelf loadings and impact loadings.
Branch Chair Glynn Robertson then thanked members for attending and extended a special thanks to Steve Hardy and Graeme Robertson for presenting and sponsoring the evening.
Meeting was closed @ 7.15pm.
