Matters Arising:

• There was discussion around forming an executive committee for the Southern Branch, but it was decided at this moment in time the Branch needs to "build up" meetings first.

• Location of meetings needs to be spread to encourage improved attendances.

• All the Southern Branch members are encouraged to help with speaker and site visit suggestions for the upcoming meetings.

Correspondence In/Out:

• BOINZ Chief Executive Nick Hill sent apologies for being unable to attend this meeting. He is hoping to attend a meeting in early 2019.

• Discussion was held around increasing consent volumes, increasing impacts of leaky building remediation and the looming increasing work load to address housing shortfalls which are all are placing strains on the wider build sector and our people.

• BOINZ is embarking on a new series of Advanced Courses:

- ADV020: Advanced Fire

- ADV005: Difficult to Consent

- BOINZ Certificates in Leadership for both Emerging (LDR-E and Advanced levels (LDR-A)

• Other new advanced courses will follow - If any members have any ideas about a course, they believe should be developed to grow member competency, please contact Nick Hill Chief Executive BOINZ.

• Jason Goei, the BOINZ Training Advisor is working on the 2019 Training Prospectus. He is also communicating with BCA Managers and key staff to understand training requirements for Councils with a view to meeting regional needs.

• The BOINZ HR Department is recruiting overseas qualified Building Surveyors who are looking to come to NZ for work. The calibre is quite high.

• The new "Careers in the Building Surveying" booklet has been a success.

• Nick wished all members a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year he also thanked members for a successful conference in Dunedin in May.

ANNUAL BRANCH CHAIR'S REPORT

Date: 16/11/2018

Please find below the annual report for the Southern Branch for the year 2018

Outline of Years programme

The year started with discussions with other Southern Building Control Group Managers about not releasing staff to attend BOINZ meetings. It has been pleasing to see that this is now happening more regularly.

This was a matter that the previous Chairman (Barry Holsted) raised in his report last year.

Moving the meetings around so that we have a Southern, Northern and two Central seems to have worked as Managers have been able to release staff to attend local events easier than meetings some distance away. This has resulted in higher attendance numbers

Meetings were held in Dunedin (Asbestos Removal), Invercargill (Site Visit to Richardson Finger Jointing Plant), Timaru (Site visit to Holcim cement Plant) and Dunedin Speakers from FENZ Fire Investigator and Evacuation Schemes)

All meetings have had either guest speakers or site visits included

Thanks also to the BCA staff at those BCA's that have assisted with arranging venues and site visits and catering.

I propose that we continue this model next year.

My thanks to Mike Nesbit from Timaru BCA or taking up the role of Secretary when no one else would. However due to Mike now doing his Diploma's he has had to step down.

Monica Hakkaart from Timaru BCA has now stepped up and taken on this role and I look forward to working with her on moving the Branch forward.

Thanks also to Jayson Ellis the Timaru BCA Manager for allowing these staff members to take up this position as there is a bit of time involved and I know this is a juggling match when everybody is busy and getting busier.

The speakers and site visits that have been arranged have mostly come from discussions between the Secretary and myself.

We need your support and ideas to arrange site visits and speakers that you want to go on or speakers that you want to listen to. I don't want to end up in the situation where members don't come to meetings because they don't like the sound of a speaker. If you would like to host a meeting because you have a speaker or site visit you could arrange please contact us.

I will continue pushing other Managers through the SBCG to release staff to attend Branch meetings.

Finally, I hope your all getting ready for Christmas, I know this year has been pretty full on year for us, as well as most if not all other BCA's. So have a good holiday break and I look forward to catching up with you all in the New Year.

BOINZ Southern Branch Chairperson
