General Business:
1) Branch Meetings
A Discussion was had regarding the low attendance to recent Southern branch meetings by branch members. Attendees were advised this subject had been raised with Building Consent Authority Managers at the February 2018 Southern Building Control Group meeting. As a result all BCA managers are now aware of dates for all future 2018 Southern branch meetings.
Following discussion, was agreed that the value of branch training meetings needed more support of BCA managers and more promotion to member colleagues.
Discussion on the need to attract a steady flow of quality guest speakers. Concluded that some may require funded attendance to attract them. Could National Office assist in some of these circumstances?
2) Education and Training
The Value of BOINZ Training Academy courses was discussed. In particular, how questions in respect of content or updates should be raised, to benefit the programme and future attendees. Could National Office respond?
In respect of the new in-employment cadetship Dip in BS the Branch sought more information on costs of the qualification and how to retain staff once trained.
It was noted that the late advice for the 1st cohort of the new Dip in BS had caused problems with accommodation requirements.
Those with staff attending will be invited to an update at the next meeting.
What is happening with the degree for those in building control that already have the Diplomas but want to gain further qualifications?
3) Dangerous Insanitary Buildings
Discussion was had on Dangerous and Insanitary Buildings, and the new wording that has been added into sections of the Building Act
4) Prefabricated Buildings
A Discussion on the Rice and Co email in March that was about pre-fab buildings. This led onto a discussion about the container house built in China under a Multi-Use approval and then shipped into Timaru.
There is Potential for flat pack houses or building components and how would we deal with them.
5) Next Meetings
Discussed potential speakers for future meetings.
Guest Presentation:
The chair welcomed guest speaker Mike Lea from Salmac. Mike owns and operates an Insulation Installation and Asbestos Removal company which is based in Dunedin.
Mikes presentation was on the very important and topical Asbestos Regulations, Asbestos Removal, the process for demolition of existing buildings, renovation of existing buildings and how new regulations are affecting Building Owners, and how these may impact on Building Consent Authority’s and Building Consent Officers’ on site.
Stu Chapman (Southern Branch Chairperson) closed the meeting at 3.00pm
Following the presentation Mike was thanked for his valuable contribution to the attending members learning and knowledge.
A special thank you to Neil McLeod for arranging the venue and Dunedin City Council for supporting the Southern BOINZ branch
