Guest Presentations:

Joel Savill the National Specification Manager for Foreman Building Systems spoke about seismic designs for suspended ceiling systems. He expressed his concerns that the sub-contractors on building projects need to work together to ensure all facets of the design are catered for and fit together. He suggested that designs done in the BIM system will eventually eliminate a lot of issues around how the elements fit together. Foreman Building Systems is a member of the AWCA and employ competent installers for walls and ceilings.

Richard Ruddell the Technical Sales Engineer for APD Limited gave a very insightful presentation on in-ground tanks. Both for water storage and holding tanks for eventual trickle feed to a stormwater system. The clear message was the importance of good design in the first instance and quality control in the installation process. The concern raised by Richard is the lack of expertise in the installation process with many installers failing to follow what look to be simple but clear installation plans and instructions. One to watch out for when inspecting these systems. Auckland City Council are insisting on PS1 and PS3/4 for design and installation which appears to be a sound process for all to follow.

John Hamlin from Firth Industries presented on the Codemarked RibRaft system and other pod variants that Firth are developing. He stressed the importance on good design particularly including geotechnical assessments and allowance for poor ground conditions. Of note is that the Codemark does not allow for expansive soil conditions and therefore where conditions are not included in the Codemark then further specific design will be required.

Site Visit: The members were invited to a site visit at the Fonterra Lichfield Plant which has recently commissioned as a state of the art milk powder drying plant. The Lichfield milk powder plant covers 3.6 hectares so is quite an impressive array of buildings. The use of the latest technology is apparent with fewer staff carrying out manual work. Amongst the technology are robotic forklifts with advanced manoeuvring capability that work all day without a break and long hours without complaint. At the end of the day they park themselves in readiness for the next job. The plant can produce 30,000 kilograms of milk powder an hour and produces hard and soft cheeses for export. The lactose that is produced as a by-product is classed as pharmaceutical grade and is more valuable than the products that it is extracted from.

Next Branch Training and Networking Event: scheduled for Friday, 25 May
