Guest Presentation:
Paul Clarke utilising a Powerpoint presentation introduced new and existing high density reconstituted wood panel products manufactured by Juken in Kaitaia and distributed by Laminex. These include:
"Strandfloor" which is BRANZ appraised for use as a sheet flooring material on suspended timber floors is available in H3.1 treated and untreated panels, both available in square edge and tongue and groove edged (green tongue for the treated, white tongue for the untreated). For the treated board, the treatment is applied to the individual woodchips, so it is throughout the board rather than on the surface. The chips are bonded using a formaldehyde free pMDI resin and the board is sealed with a wax emulsion to increase moisture resistance. The untreated board can be exposed to the weather for 8 weeks, the treated one for 12 weeks.
See the Strandfloor brochure here:
"Strandsarking" is a 16.3mm thick engineered wood panel board which is designed for use under shingles and other similar roofing products. It has recently been BRANZ appraised for use under membranes with a gradient of 2 degrees or more.
Find out more about Strandsarking here:
A new Strand product in the pipeline is a wall rigid barrier similar to Oriented Strand board, but 9mm thick.
General Business:
Winton Griggs (G12/AS1 clause 5.2.3) touched on the issue of hot water cylinder safe trays which are now required under all new internal domestic cylinders. Chris pointed out they are also required under some situations for commercial applications, such as where the activity has a residential component. Note the drain must be 40mm.
Paul Farrar a visitor to the meeting advised he is currently processing mainly for MDC.
Tim Bijl expressed reservations on the reliance of Councils on BRANZ appraisals when BRANZ does not stand by them when there is a failure. He also advised he has concerns regarding the use of OS board for top plate and lintel fixings.
Chris Hill has been experiencing issues with retaining walls being built under a Schedule 1 exemption and drainage requirements not being addressed. This is especially an issue in new sloping subdivisions.
Paul Harrison raised the issue of temporary bridges erected on private properties along SH 63 between Renwick and Kawatiri Junction via St Arnaud following the earthquake of last November. He was wanting to know when the specified life starts from. Chris Wood said S113 specifies this is from the time the consent is granted.
Don Frame remarked on the topical issue of storm water storage, citing Canada as an example. New subdivisions with 12 or more houses are required to direct storm water to large storage tanks that act as a buffer during wet times, and a reserve for irrigation in dry times.
Mark Hunter talked about reliance on Codemark. Mark was unclear as to how much weight a Codemark accreditation carries. Chris advised that a Codemarked product is deemed to comply with the Building Code.
Special thank you to: Nelson City Council for providing venue and refreshments
Chris Wood closed the meeting at 16.45
