Site visit:

  • The meeting included a presentation about the work done by the team at the Southbrook Fire Research Ltd Laboratory and a tour of the test facility led Kyle Koke, Laboratory Manager and Mat Hooper, Technical Manager.
  • Members were provided with an overview of the history of the company, and their accreditation. They are an IANZ accredited test facility, testing the performance of fire rated systems to AS1530.4 and AS/NZ 3013:2005, and providing IANZ accredited test reports in accordance with these standards. Currently they can provide IANZ accredited reports for Section 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 of AS1530.4 and AS/NZ 3013:2005 Appendix C Fire Resistance Tests. They are also an approved Research and Development test facility.
  • The test process was explained, starting with the construction of the full assembly to be tested, how this is installed into the firing kiln and then performance of the test subject is monitored throughout the duration of the test. The lab uses FireLIMS software to track the performance of fire rated wall and floor penetrations in a wide variety of substrates with tests running for up to 4 hours. Detailed monitoring and photographic recording throughout the test help to provide customers with detailed data about the compliance or failure of the test subject. [see PDF presentation slides attached]
  • The close links between the work done at the lab providing evidence and data to support stated product FRR ratings, and the work done by members in consenting and inspecting building work using these products and systems was discussed.
  • Members were then taken on a tour of the test facility, looking at some wall and floor test assemblies that were being prepared, followed by an inspection of the gas fired kiln and monitoring equipment. The test process was outlined and the H&S risks and how these are managed by the team were discussed.
  • The secretary thanked the team at Southbrook Fire Research Ltd for hosting the visit and for the interesting and informative presentation and tour.
