Guest Presentation: Andrew Minturn - Clevaco Ltd.
Cleva Pod® is a patented forming system for concrete slab foundations made from recycled plastic. It is an alternative to polystyrene raft waffle POD or slab on grade concrete foundations.
Andrew outlined the background New Zealand’s current amount of waste that polystyrene waffle or rib raft foundations add to landfill every year. They currently make up approximately 80% of the NZ Market. Polystyrene is not biodegradable and is an environmental contaminant.
Once polystyrene has bonded with concrete it is considered waste and must go to landfill. This is an environmental problem that will be inherited by the next generation to deal with.
This product has been developed it is affectionally known as the upside-down paddling pool. It is a green slab. Andrew showed videos about dismantling the slab with no waste.
- Cleva Pod saves the total plastic going to landfill
- Is NZ made and supports local manufacturing
- it is part of the recover, recycle reuse and reduce philosophy
The advantage is the pods are quick to lay, a specifically designed baffled has been designed to stop concrete from getting underneath thew pod and into the voids. Your can cut a pod on any angle allowing for any drainage, pipe holes for drainage can be drilled into the top of the pod. The mesh and then concreted over. Pods are strong enough for walking on.
Guest Presentation: Rob Tierney and Paul Charteris - Save Board
'Save Board' comprises a range of low carbon, affordable, moisture-resistant building materials made from upcycled packaging in New Zealand. 'Save Board's' products are also 100% recyclable is providing a circular solution.
Paul Charteris is the co-founder and chief executive of SaveBoard This company came out of the idea to reduce waste from milk cartons given out in schools. The technology originated in the US and Paul secured the Asia Pacific rights. The company partnered with Freightways, Tetra Pak, and sustainable solutions outfit Closed Loop to make it happen.
The company placed an order for the plant in December 2020 and started producing boards in October 2021.
The plant is located within our Boinz Branch area at Te Rapa Hamilton. They are planning to start a Sydney plant in October 2022 after a 1.8 million grant from the NSW government.
Paul showed some world examples of where this product has been used for exterior applications.
The product is an exciting example of upcycling as it takes the tetra Pak product and cleans it and goes though the plant and the heating process re bonds under compression into a board.
