Guest Presentation:
Frame Protection System: Gwyn Williamson
FPS® Weathertight® is a tested and Codemark certified weathertight vapour permeable roof and wall underlay membrane system, that when applied over timber, steel framing, oriented strand board (OSB), plywood, particle board, and ROMB materials provides:
• Interim weather protection to the construction, for up to 90-120 days before final claddings are fitted. This allows interior works to proceed to completion, provided the FPS® checklist is completed in full and a moisture test complies with Table 4, NZ3602:2003.
• Long term weathertightness and interstitial moisture management that ensures continued dry roof and wall construction elements, including insulation.
• Watertight, the system is non-absorbent, there is no tenting effect (wicking) or capillary action. The system has been "water streaming" and "water column pressure" tested.
• Wind/Airtight, preventing air and moisture ingress into construction.
• Moisture Vapour permeable towards the outside (cavity) to prevent condensation or moisture being trapped in during construction (interstitial).
• High tear resistance, the system is durable and has been wind pressure and uplift tested. It can withstand extra high winds without a rigid backing.
• The ability to be exposed to the elements for up to 90+ days.
The system is BBA and IRB independently tested. Some performance examples show:
• Permeability - Underlays are between 70 and 350 times greater than the NZ Building Code requirements.
• Water pressure - Underlays are between 75 and 275 times greater than the NZ Building Code requirements.
• Wind uplift - The NZ Building Code states that extra high wind zones are at 55 meters per second. The Weathertight underlay can withstand greater than 70 metres per second.
• Not all tapes stick to this product.
Product Installation Information:
- All the overlaps are taped to seal off.
- There is a seal across the bottom plate.
- It uses cap and staple fixings. There is no air or water ingress and no staple pull.
- There is no tape required at the corner as the paper is waterproof.
- Marshal trade seasls are part of the Codemark.
Q and A's:
Q- Do the installers require training? Is there an installation manual or a document that is presented at the end?
A- Training sessions occur for the owners and the installers. Trying to include name of the LBP's or the building companies. We have trained over 350 builders.
Q- Combustibility in terms of fire?
A- Yes, tested for combustibility
Q- Cost comparison with Ecoply?
A- No cost comparison. Much cheaper than rigid barrier and less time required for installation.
Q- What about affordable homes, are there other wraps that come at affordable prices?
A- The system saves time, which explains the cost. The system can potentially be installed within 3 working days.
Q- Is it only limited to NZS3604?
A- it can be used as commercial
Q- Extra high wind zone?
A- The system was tested to extra high wind zone at 55 meters per second. The test results were a pass.
Q- Does it need supporting?
A-It is self-supporting at 1200CTRS
Q- Does it allow for metal built steel framing with regards to fixing?
A- Yes, training sessions are in progress. It is recommended you use double sided tape.
Q- Any considerations for fall protection?
A- We are looking to increase the range of products. Currently fall protection is not part of the scope.
The Branch Chair Glynn Robertson thanked all presenters and sponsors of the evening.
