ANNUAL CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
Date: 15 November 2024
To the Board of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand
ANNUAL REPORT
Well, this year has been another interesting and busy one, the effects of Covid have eased off but are still being felt, interest rates soared, building material cost rose even more and for most Councils consent numbers fell to levels not seen in recent years which has impacted on fees.
We’ve had some great training and experiences this year, including a visit to Niagara Timber in Southland in March, a tour of the Dunedin hospital construction site in June, and insightful presentations from Pro Clima and Mates in Construction in September.
We’ve also had a lot of really good discussion at our meetings and agendas have been packed to maximize the benefit for all members, especially those traveling long distances.
A highlight of 2024 was presenting medals to 19 of our Southern members with BOINZ continuous loyalty memberships during our September meeting. Congratulations to all the awardees - your commitment is greatly appreciated by BOINZ.
The other highlight of the year was the annual BOINZ conference in Wellington where we had two Southern Branch members winning awards; Vicky McMillan for Unsung Hero – A volunteer who has dedicated significant time to the institute and Liam Brown for Young Building Control Professional of the Year.
We have had 9 new members this year taking our total membership for the Southern Branch to 183 members, which is 17% of BOINZ branch members. We are the second largest branch in New Zealand with an increasing number of members attending meetings and have even had to change the room we hold our meetings in to accommodate the increasing number attending. It’s encouraging to see new faces at our gatherings, as this enriches our discussions. We hope this positive trend continues into 2025, as Olivia and I prioritise a diverse line-up of technical speakers and site visit opportunities.
Having Dan as our Board representative has been incredibly valuable, providing insights into BOINZ's direction and initiatives. Thank you Dan for keeping us informed and being our link between Branch and Board.
A few thank yous;
Thank you to Dunedin City Council for continuing to provide a space to conduct our meetings and Neil for booking rooms,
Southland District Council for hosting us at our first meeting back in March, and
Simpson Strong-Tie who are now catering our meetings to boost networking.
Lastly, thank you to all our members, especially those who are attending on a regular basis. You all contribute to having a successful Branch and without you making the time and effort, these meetings would not be as successful.
