Whangarei District Council

Our busy Building Consents team have recently grown in size in order to meet the demand for processing Building Consent applications. For this reason, we have an exciting opportunity for a second Team Leader to join the Consents team, together supporting ten Building Controls Officers and various third-party contractors.

We welcome interest from those with leadership experience in a regulatory environment who are interested in creating a positive, supportive and productive work culture within the Consents team. Technical knowledge of building consent processing is an advantage; however, we are open to hearing from those with experience in leading technical teams or those who have supported people in a regulatory environment or similar.

The successful candidate will thrive working collaboratively in a team environment and enjoy working together as a building department management team (Compliance, Inspections, Consents, Admin Support) to achieve aligned, progressive outcomes for the group.

This is an opportunity to lead a dedicated team of professionals while benefitting from a great work-life balance. If you think you have what it takes to be successful in this role and are eager for us to consider your application, you will need to be able to demonstrate:

  • Leadership experience demonstrating a consultative, positive, empowering approach
  • Ability and confidence to make decisions on complex operational matters
  • Support Building Control Officers to make technical decisions
  • Sound understanding of Building Consent Authority (BCA) processes or experience in similar regulatory processes
  • Good communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Ability to mediate with and resolve conflict in difficult circumstances and with different customers
  • Experience managing internal and external stakeholder expectations (especially during periods of high levels of consent activity)
  • Ability to work methodically and efficiently and to set and meet appropriate standards and deadlines
  • Ability to lead a team of technical staff in a challenging technical environment
  • Solid understanding of the Building Act, the Building Code and Council’s obligations as a BCA, or experience in similar regulatory frameworks
  • Degree qualified (desirable)

If this sounds like you and you would like to be considered for this fantastic role within our hardworking and progressive team then don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to learn more or submit your application.
