This people and process focused role is your opportunity to make a difference to the development of Nelson. Our team of 25 undertake the full range of work under our Building Consent Authority and Territorial Authority regulatory functions. Our team of diverse specialists cover building inspections, consents, earthquake-prone buildings, building compliance and quality assurance.

To successfully lead the Building Unit team you will have a mix of people leadership skills plus technical building construction and/or inspections expertise. We take a practical and positive approach to our regulatory work and this, combined with your relationship management expertise, judgement and foresight, will ensure that potential risks are highlighted and liabilities or issues are averted. Key pieces of work include supporting and embedding new technologies and best practise for continuous service improvement, and maintenance of our IANZ accreditation.

In return, you will be well supported by 3 Team Leaders, our experienced building professionals and very capable administration team, plus you’ll have a great bunch of people to develop, coach or mentor. You will also have collegial support from your in-house peers in the Environmental Management Group, as well as externally, through the South Island network.

It’s a diverse and challenging role, which will suit someone with experience of the building control or construction industries (e.g. building surveying). Local government experience is also preferred.
