Our Building Services team is part of the Community and Environmental Services department here at the Tauranga City Council, and is responsible for ensuring the safety of people living and working in buildings!

We are looking for a self-driven Principal Building Officer to join our team! A senior position, this role is responsible for providing technical support and project management services to large or complex building consent projects. An outward facing role, the ideal person will have the passion, commitment and interpersonal skills to positively engage with our customers.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level technical expertise and training to the Building Services Department including developing systems improvements.
  • Provide technical expert advice and training to the Environmental services team!
  • Mentor, guide and advise colleagues to support their development
  • Provide technical support and project management services to large or complex BC projects
  • Coordinate building issues towards gaining a resolution
  • Audit Building Services functions while facilitating the necessary efficiencies
  • Coordinate weather-tightness issues and provide technical advice
  • Process and/or Inspect complex building consent applications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Ideally 10 years' experience in the building industry
  • Ideally 3 years' experience in a NZ Building Consent Authority
  • Sound legislation of the relevant building legislation
  • A Trade certificate in Carpentry, Advanced Carpentry, or another relevant certification
  • Minimum BCA Regulation 18 qualification or appropriate international qualification recognized by NZQA
  • Competent in Residential 1, 2, and 3 and/or Commercial 1 and 2 building projects
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Customer-focused approach
  • Current full drivers licence
