Horowhenua District Council

We’re on a journey to take our region from good to great and having a lot of fun along the way. This is Council, but not as you know it – we’re shaking things up, in the midst of a transformation journey driven by passion, pride and genuine aroha for our community.

Nestled in the heart of the Horowhenua, Levin is a Kiwi town with soul. With the Tasman Sea coast on one side and the Tararua Ranges on the other, mountains, lakes, rivers, and beaches are all within just 20 minutes’ drive of each other, and our township hums with eclectic thrift stores, art galleries, local markets, a boutique movie theatre, and no shortage of great coffee. Just an hour or so’s drive from Wellington but half the price, the living here is easy. Home to a host of hiking trails, nature reserves, the world-famous-in-NZ Levin Adventure Park and around 20,000 residents, this is a pretty special part of Aotearoa to call home.

Horowhenua is growing faster than predicted and this is expected to continue for the next 20 years. We anticipate we’ll need to double the number of houses built every year to accommodate new residents – to support this growth, we need a future-focused Building Officer to join our Consents team and play a key role in helping our region go from good to great.

About the Role

Working closely with our diverse community, you’ll process building consent applications, inspect, and certify consented works. You’ll build solid relationships in the community as well as Council, taking a hands-on approach to problem-solving and guiding applicants through the consent process. Your days will be split between site visits and the office, with scheduled time for processing applications and completing inspections.

Part of a tight-knit team of six Building Advisory Officers and two cadets, you will report to Megan Leyland, the Consents Manager, an inclusive leader who started with Council over 10 years ago and has worked his way through a variety of roles, getting to know the ins and outs of how things are done here (and becoming a pretty good case study for the career progression opportunities available). We’re a diverse, sociable bunch who get on well and take real pride in our mahi.

About You

As a core member of the Consents team, you’ll bring a positive approach to inspection work, customer-focused and keen to get stuck in. You will have proven building control knowledge and the qualifications to back it up (a qualification listed under Regulation 18 of the building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006 is required).

A strong communicator with sound knowledge of the Building Act, Building Regulations, Building Code, and inspection/consent process, you’re comfortable reading and interpreting design plans and specifications and have comprehensive knowledge of construction principles and practices. Your keen eye for detail means you have a meticulous work approach, and you take real pride in getting things right the first time.

So, what’s in it for you?

Along with continuous development and opportunities for future growth, you will enjoy a competitive salary (Depending on your skills and experience, the range for this role is $73,411 to $86,367) and stable role within a thriving Council where the culture is great, innovation is ongoing, and your work has a genuine impact on the positive growth of the community. We also want you to be able to juggle successfully both work and home life – we get it! Modern life is busy enough, right? So, we offer a flexible work program that we think will be attractive to you!

Outside of work, you’ll enjoy affordable living, easy commutes, and a great lifestyle with an abundance of unspoilt nature right on your doorstep to explore.

We’re reviewing applications as they come in, so if a Levin lifestyle sounds like a bit of you please apply now by clicking the link below, or for more information contact Adam Miller on Mobile 0272 414 798 or Sapphron Trower on 021 168 2317.
