Great views and a fix-up, but this Hamilton house can't be sold

A derelict house on a hill that has shifted a metre off its foundations has a view of Hamilton city that can't be bought.

Hamilton's Lake Rotoroa to Pirongia Mountain is on one side; the city centre to Te Aroha on the other.

It would be a renovator's dream but there is no chance of picking up 18A Ruakiwi Rd, next to the city's water tower, on the open market.

The house is built on a reserve, part of the city's water network and earmarked for future water needs, meaning it can never be sold.

Information from the heritage team at Hamilton City Libraries shows a building permit issued on November 11, 1934 for an addition to the dwelling but there is no record of the house ever being built.

Electoral rolls show IW L Waddel, listed as being the town clerk, lived at Ruakiwi Road from 1928.

Last used as a rental, Parent's Place Hamilton have asked Hamilton City Council if it can take over the house on the hill.

"We don't have access to that [Claudelands] house anymore because Trust Waikato have sold that property and we have a lease until September. Come September, we have nowhere to go," Christine Norris from Parents Place said at a June council committee meeting.
