Determining Your Training Needs

It is important for members to determine what training and development is needed each year, to get maximum benefit from the professional development activities undertaken

This is a three step process:

  1. Identify the skills and knowledge that you already have
This requires a critical analysis of work experience (skills practised and demonstrated) and previous education and study (knowledge). Most of this can be done through annual performance evaluations and BCA Accreditation.

  2. Consider where you are heading in your career
Determine what your career goals and aspirations are, and consider the job roles within your profession and the skills, knowledge and attributes they require. Perhaps discuss these with a manager or mentor and learn more about the options available. If you haven’t already, begin to set goals and identify career aspirations.

  3. Identify the “gap”
By completing the previous steps you will have identified the areas in which you need further skill development or knowledge to achieve your career goal or aspiration. The ‘gap’ is your development or training need. Selecting the right course Selecting the right course The following may assist you in determining courses to meet your personal needs:

Selecting the Right Course

The following may assist you in determining courses to meet your personal needs:

  1. Is this course related to my work?
The content of the programme being considered needs to be broadly related to the type of work in which the member is involved.

  2. Is it the right level and depth for me?
The category and objectives of the course should make clear the level of knowledge or the level of competence which it seeks to impart. It should, for example, be clear whether the course:

    • Teaches fundamental principles or skills
    • Builds on existing knowledge/skills to relate them to practical situations and extend them to broader range of applications
    • Provides guidance on dealing with complex situations
    • Provides an overview that brings participants up-to-date on new developments

  3. Do I need any previous knowledge or experience of the subject, and if so, to what level?
The participants for whom the course is intended should be clearly defined so that potential applicants may decide whether the programme would be above or below their existing knowledge or skill.

  4. Will it be properly structured?
The importance of the design of a course increases with the complexity of the objective. Simply to provide an overview may demand little beyond a two hour seminar. At the other end of the scale is a course with ambitious objectives, the content of which should provide a well integrated mix of teaching, discussion and participatory practice through a variety of presentation methods.

  5. Are the presenters technically competent to meet the objectives which they have set themselves?
Making judgements of this sort from a brochure or handbook is a difficult as deciding if the chef of a restaurant is able to meet the demands of its menu. However, it should be at least clear that the individuals involved have the necessary technical qualifications and/or experience.

  6. Does the course delivery method suit your learning style?
Although there may be benefits from attending courses that include a variety of learning experiences, members should consider their own preferred learning styles to get maximum benefit from CPD activity.
