National Qualifications

National Diploma in Building Surveying (Small Buildings)
National Diploma in Building Surveying (Medium-Large Buildings)

The Training Academy is a division of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand.

A primary purpose of the Training Academy is to provide technical training to prepare a student to undertake the Assessment for Prior Learning (APL) conducted by the Otago Polytechnic.

The courses offered are based around the Unit Standards placed on the New Zealand Qualification Authorities framework, but not offered by any other provider. The Unit Standards training is to provide the student with the technical knowledge contained within the various compliance documents and BCA processes which when combined with the appropriate level of practical experience will enable students to obtain individual units towards the Diploma in Building Control Surveying, Small Buildings and large Buildings.

The Assessment of Prior Learning

The APL Process is an assessment against your body of experience from both work and life in general, so APL will be most useful to adults. Talk to us about our Self Assessment Tool.

Capable NZ enables you to gain a nationally-recognised qualification without going back to the classroom. It works by rewarding you for what you already know, and helping you achieve the extra knowledge you need.

Capable NZ is a unique organisation established by Otago Polytechnic as an evolution of their highly regarded Centre for Assessment of Prior Learning, or CAPL.  Its world-leading process means the knowledge and skills you have gained over the course of your life and work can count towards a range of formal qualifications, from certificates to degrees.

CAPABLE NZ is leading the nationwide project to assist building control officers to gain these qualifications.
