Cadet Scheme
Cadet Programme
The Building Officials Institute’s Training Academy has recognised that a skills shortage is fast approaching the building controls sector within New Zealand. The intention is to develop a national cadet scheme that is a work based learning pathway that will provide quality skills in all aspects of local authority building controls.
The programme structure has been adopted by a number of Councils around the country and adapted by those Councils to meet their own recruitment needs. To know more about the programmes on offer contact your local Council/s.
Strategic Aims
- Establish a vocational skills pathway for cadet building control officials in New Zealand.
- To enable cadets to recognise and gain access to a wide range of high quality learning programmes from partners based on innovative and high quality teaching, learning and assessment methods to meet the needs of those cadets.
- To avoid a serious and foreseeable skills and service delivery gap facing building consent authorities and local councils.
Objectives
- To develop a coherent skills pathway formula for cadets that facilitates maximum achievement and clear progression routes.
- To engage cadets in the learning and progression outcomes of high quality work related learning.
- To develop opportunities to meet the needs of learners, their aspirations and aptitudes across their ability range.
- To enable cadets to progress and achieve at an appropriate pace to meet their individual needs.
- To further develop progression pathways into higher education from vocational routes towards degrees and professional qualification status.
- To support the development of appropriate impartial advice and guidance to all building control appointed cadets.
- Encouraging cadets to develop generically transferable skills such as the ability to plan, research, present and evaluate different forms of information.
- To increase the cadet’s self confidence and ability to work with greater independence.
- To develop the cadet’s ability to reflect on their own learning and enhance their levels of achievement and performance in other areas of work.
